Overview of the Craft Beer Club

Most beer of the month clubs are discovery-oriented... they want to help you (or your favorite beer lover) discover new beers, breweries, and styles to enjoy. They each have a different focus, and this club focuses on something called "Craft Beer."

The term craft beer generally refers to small breweries making beers in small batches. Of course small is relative and many of the most successful craft breweries get bought out by the behemoths, so there's much debate about what a craft beer really is. Our take? A craft beer is something that looks and tastes significantly different than mega beers like Budwesier, Miller, Heineken, and Corona. Craft beer focuses on beermaking technique and unusual ingredients, and craft breweries operate more like wineries than factories.

The styles of beer shipped with the Craft Beer club (some examples of style are IPA, Stout, Kolsch, and Wheat Beer) vary widely each month and each shipment is picked to offer a variety of options. The beers come from all over the country (and sometimes Canada) and while each brewery might be available regionally, typically the beers that are shipped aren't available nationwide.

An important customer-centric feature of the Craft Beer Club is that some customization is available. If you only want shipments which contain certain styles of beer, or you never want shipments that contain certain styles of beer, you can let them know (after you purchase, you call customer service to talk with a real live person about it). They'll skip shipments that don't fit your preferences, but they won't customize what's in the box (this is standard practice for beer of the month clubs).

The Craft Beer Club includes a monthly newsletter which describes the beer in the shipment, as well as the beermaking, brewery history, and includes "Food for your Brew" recipes--these great for helping you pair the right food with the beers (just like wine pairing recipes). We feel this is one of the better beer newsletters that comes with beer club memberships--some just give you a boring piece of paper with very little information (if anything).

The Original Craft Beer Club is shipped every month, every other month, or every three months to your preference and shipping is always free (except in Hawaii and Alaska).

Like all beer of the month clubs, an adult signature is required at delivery and therefore it is recommended to have the beer shipments sent to a workplace where an adult is always present. If that's not possible, you can sign up for FedEx Delivery Manager service to get text messages about when your package is expected to arrive so you can be home, or you can redirect your packages to the nearest FedEx location for pickup at your convenience.

There are two ways to buy a craft beer club subscription from The Original Craft Beer Club. You can join the club on an ongoing basis or you can buy a fixed-length subscription for yourself or someone else--just follow the cues for "Give as a Gift" when you get to the site.

One great aspect to The Craft Beer Club is the ability to choose exactly how many shipments you want, which helps you stay within your gifting budget. Terrific craft beer gifts start at just $39 for a one-time shipment and go up to $443 for a full year of monthly shipments. All shipments include a free 1-year subscription to Beer Connoisseur Web Magazine (a $15 value) which includes 6 issues, Beer School, Expert Beer Reviews, Member Forums, and more.

Not surprisingly, they reward customers who spend more with bonus gifts for your lucky beer lover. If you buy 3 shipments or more, the first shipment includes a free beer bottle opener. This may seem like a cheesy item, but the beer opener has a great ergonomic feel to it (almost like an OXO product) and is easy to use. If you purchase at least 6 shipments, the first shipment also includes a set of custom designer coasters with fun beer slogans on 'em. If you splurge and buy 12 shipments, you'll save $25 and they'll get the bottle opener and the coasters.

The Craft Beer Club makes a great last-minute gift as you can customize and print out (or email) a gift notice for the big day. Or, if you planned ahead, you can add a customized gift card to the first shipment for $1.99 or have the card send ahead via USPS for $2.50.

For the most part, this beer of the month club is the same if you buy an ongoing subscription vs a pre-paid gift subscription with one notable difference. You get all three bonus gifts in your first shipment (but not the $25 savings). Warning: If you don't stick around for 3 months, they'll bill you $19.90 for those freebies! But you'll love your beer so much that won't be an issue for you...

How much should you buy? The 12-beer shipments contain 3 each of of 4 different beer styles, while the 24-beer shipments contain 6 each of 4 different styles. Most people choose the 12-beer option so you're not stuck with too many of something you didn't like (though this is a great opportunity to start trading with your beer buddies) but if you have friends over for watching sports or playing poker with some frequency, go for the 24-pack.

The Craft Beer Club has a history of picking lesser-known out-of-the-way breweries to work with. There's a craft beer explosion under way with gazillions of local breweries and many large-production options available at the grocery store, but most of the time you won't find any of these beers at a local store or brewery.

The Original Craft Beer Club delivers craft beers right to your door!

By definition "A microbrewery is a small brewery with a limited production capacity which, of necessity, produces labor intensive hand-crafted beers.” Craft Beer Club takes pride in finding the right mix of microbrewers to share every month with our members. The Original Craft Beer Club reaches out to these hidden gems and delivers 12 or 24 bottles directly to your door, along with an informative color newsletter with articles on the Brewery, Brew master, and the individual beers.

It’s All About the Beer

Craft Breweries are small, independent and traditional. Craft beer brewmasters produce beer the way it is supposed to be—in small batches, using traditional ingredients and time-honored brewing methods. It's all about creating a flavorful, high-quality beer very different than the mass-produced, high-profile versions. The Original Craft Beer Club's specialty is discovering the best beers these highly skilled craft brewers have to offer. We do the research, so you don't have to.

Not all craft brews are good by definition. A big beer company with a talented brewmaster and quality ingredients can produce an excellent beer, just as an unskilled small craft brewer can produce an uninteresting or even flawed beer. The only way to know this is to taste it! The Original Craft Beer Club buyers sample hundreds of beers each year to bring you only the best.

Many brewers, many styles. From ales to lagers and porters to stouts, The Original Craft Beer Club is a perfect way to discover the many styles of craft beers produced in this country. In fact, America has more craft breweries than any other country on the planet. As recently as the 1970s there were only 50 breweries in the U.S.. By the mid-1990s more than 1,000 breweries had emerged onto the scene. And today that number has exploded to over 1,600 craft breweries and brew pubs!
